In 1994, together with Alain D’Hooghe and Patrice Junius (for the layout), I started Themes magazine. It lasted 5 issues and I lost a bunch of money because of an overly optimistic business plan…
Issue nr 1, of which there are but a few copies left, can be downloaded here (14.5Mb). The four other issues are still for sale and can be obtained at Librairie Husson (after the holidays)… Michel Husson is a publisher of fine photography books himself. His bookshop, focused exclusively on photography books, is definitely worth a visit when you’re in Brussels.

It is probably to early to be preoccupied but here is the dilemma: when I’ll be back living in Belgium, (no set date yet) I’ll try and find out what that country is about, and do a story called “This is not Belgium”. There will be pictures from when I was living there and of course a lot (most of it) of new work. But for that new work: colour or b&w? Until today I never raised that kind of question in my mind. Now I do. Rats…

(No the guy on the picture is NOT David Allan Harvey…)

By accident (chance?) found this nice bottle yesterday… Haven’t tasted the content yet. Seems the wine is exported to California as well.
And in case you wonder who took the picture on the label (there is no copyright mention): it is mine…

You’re in for a few celebrations this month…
Today the Tour de France starts in Monaco. I love bikes and bike racing, and was lucky enough to follow the Tour for the last victory of Bernard Hinault in 1985. But 40 years ago Eddy Merckx, “the cannibal”, took the start of the Tour de France and had the first of his 5 wins of the event, taking EVERYTHING from the yellow jersey to the mountains and points jerseys. I don’t have pictures of Eddy, even though his brother and I were at the same school in Etterbeek (his parents had a grocery store nearby).
The same month Eddy started his glorious years, man landed on the moon for the first time… My parents bought a (B&W) TV set for the occasion…

20 years ago it started in Hungary. The first domino to fall, followed by Czechoslowakia, East Germany, Romania… 1989 was an incredible year…
End of March I was in Hungary to work on a chapter of the Refugees book. There were pro-democracy demonstrations in the streets… Little did we know how far this would go.

CAMBODIA. Kambol (Phnom Penh). 10/06/2009: Richard ROGERS, Head of the Defence team, at a press conference on the 26th day of Duch trial at the ECCC.
Day 26 is the last one for me at the ECCC for some time: I’ll be off to Brussels this saturday and be back in Penh at the beginning of August. I sure am going to miss quite a bit: the testimonies of Mam Nay, interrogator at S21, Him Houy, guard at S21. They are in the pipeline and both took their oath in front of the Lok Ta Dambang Dek statue (the Spirit with the Iron Stick), yesterday and today. But I will not miss the catering at the ECCC tribunal… If you care to join…
