Dilemma

It is probably to early to be preoccupied but here is the dilemma: when I’ll be back living in Belgium, (no set date yet) I’ll try and find out what that country is about, and do a story called “This is not Belgium”. There will be pictures from when I was living there and of course a lot (most of it) of new work. But for that new work: colour or b&w? Until today I never raised that kind of question in my mind. Now I do. Rats…

  1. john…

it’s too early to say…for me, both of your work in Cambodia (b/w & color) work but for 2 different reasons: it’s all about context….for these 2 images…it’s not ‘easy’ for i like the blue of the sky, but the monochrome of that whatever-the-hell-it-is structure…and i dont know the light in belgium…for me, if the light is pristine, tropical, sharp, then color…if flat, muggy, ache, b/w….i think, in the end, for this image, maybe color…

about about one dominant attribute (all color or all b/w) with spots of the other??..

if u can put up more pics, i’d love to swallow and see how you are reacting visually again to Belgium…

    is that Anton? ;) )))))))))))))

  2. Yes it definitely is too early. But I’ll have to start with one or the other right from the beginning. A matter of calibrating the mind before shooting…

As for the light in Belgium: you get 80 days max/ year with bright blue and 150/ year of uniform grey, the rest being cloudy BUT with windy clouds or foggy. But fog in colour is also interesting. Muggy colours are interesting.

Ah but what the heck.. I’ll see. there is still time…

Not it is not Anton either (we never met).

The structure: IT IS THE ATOMIUM!!!!!!!!! You don’t know the Atomium? AAAAAAH, I finally found the weak spot in your culture…

It is our Eiffel tower… The symbol of the 1958 World exhibition, the time when everything was possible, the booming economy, the big leap forward in W.Europe. It is an atom of iron enlarged soem million times…

I have the same dilemma all the time; color or b&w. Diferent languages… both sweet languages…
And I can’t decide. And probably never will.
    Great picture or pictures :)
    Can’t decide witch I prefer more… also

  4. John! ;) )))…

damn, the ATOMIUM! :) )))….yea, (forgive me ami) never heard of it….BUT…have seen pics (for some reason i didnt realize it was Belique)….and, (keep it quiet), I have LOTS of weak spots, gaps and holes in my ‘knowledge/awareness’… culturally speaking ;) ))

well, the light seems fit for b/w…BUT, i too like foggy color, muddy color, i just dont like ‘flat’ color…after an hiatus of almost 10 years, im shooting again in color…but very selective, it feels weird to ‘see’ react in color (i’m scared to look at the negs, so i havent developed yet)…but yea, gotta me one mind set or another…

so, i think; GO FOR COLOR….u’ve done just great stuff in Cambodia with that trust M8 of yours with color, and i think it would be nice to see where you go with Color after having lived and shot in Cambodia for so long…especially since the light is so damn different…and the color of the 2 nations….

can u post more pic??….did you get in involved in that Trent Magnum project called ‘home’??…i saw some of Jacob’s stuff and it would be great for you to be a part of that project…would love to see that….

and, well, now i’ve got 10 minutes before i have to cook, and then write for the night (no computer after 19:00), and i gotta google this Atomium….

    isnt everything still possible….in Belgium? ;) )

    hugs

on Jacob’s new website (which i saw last week), he posted new work about Copenhagen…in his intro, he wrote it was sparked by an email from Trent calling for projects on ‘home’…
