There we go again… The last straight line before the verdict: the final statements by the Civil Party Lawyers today, the prosecutors tomorrow. Then the defense lawyers. And finally Duch’s statements. Verdict? March 2010?

Koh Pich Island, once the vegetable garden of Phnom Penh, has become a sunday outing for people from the Penh, dreaming of their brand new 4 bedroom villa in the middle of a park with (nice?) statues.

CAMBODIA. Phnom Penh. 22/11/2009: Koh Pich Island development, financed by Canadia Bank with an initial involvement of 7NG company, famous for the violent Dey Krohom eviction. About 100 families living on the island and providing Phnom Penh with vegetables cultivated on the 70 ha of fertile soil were evicted in 2005. They were offered 2,5$/m2 whereas at the time the land was valued at 20 to 24$/m2.

It is the place where you might end up after having been bullied, cheated and/or evicted, when you are at the end of the line. It is the place where you should be able to start your life again. But can you really? Does it give you a feeling of security? I try to give you a few clues. Judge for yourself…
I just uploaded a short story on Social Land Concessions on my website.

CAMBODIA. Saem (Preah Vihear). 17/11/2009: First harvest by some of the 800 families of the Social Land Concession set up by General Pen Lim in 2007.
It seems the village at the foot of the Preah Vihear cliff will soon be relocated. To make way for a tourism complex when the row with Thailand about the border will be settled and now that it takes only 6 or 7 hours on good roads to get there from Phnom Penh or three from Siem Reap?

CAMBODIA. Sra Em (Preah Vihear). 18/11/2009: Small village at the foot ot the Preah Vihear cliff, it became prosperous with the Angkorian temple becoming UNESCO World Heritage, the border dispute with Thailand and the subsequent influx of tourists and soldiers. The inhabitants will soon be relocated, probably to make way for a tourism complex.

Until friday.
And hoping it will not rain… It’ll make it easier to get where I want to go.

CAMBODIA. Poum Triey (Tonle Sap lake). 5/10/2002: Submerged trees. Water level reaches 4m during rainy season.
This picture is a decoy: it’s not where I want to go…

On October 12th, 43 families from four different villages received an ultimatum issued by the Court of Koh Kong to leave their home by October 27th, apparently to solve a land dispute involving 200 Ha between Sok Khong and Heng Huy, two owners of very big plantations nearby. The people live there since 1983.
