Before the intersections comes the place you were born. So many different ways to go. So many possibilities to get stuck. So many opportunities to break loose and move ahead. And there is always the place you were born to see what you achieved or missed…

Some 150 farmers from four adjacent villages blocked the road to Takeo to protest the sale of their land, allegedly by their Commune Chief. It was sunday and hundreds of motorists were blocked on their way back to the capital after having commemorated their deceased family members during the Chheing Menh ceremony. We lost a few hours. The farmers lost their land and some of them their freedom.

In February 1990 (yes, that is 20 years ago) I was commissioned to do a one-month long trip to Vietnam (see the story on my website). Régis Wargnier was going to shoot “Indochine” with Catherine Deneuve, and at the time there were rather few images of post-war Vietnam around. So he basically gave me a carte blanche, coupled with generous travel expenses, just to see what Vietnam looked like in 1990 before he started shooting. I would travel, accompanied by a very comprehensive fixer/monitor who managed to allow me a huge freedom of movement, in the North for a couple of weeks with a pale-blue Volga with curtains on the back window, take the train to Ho Chi Minh, and spend some more time down in that area.

The 19th slideshow about land issues has the latest pictures, but it’s the first one of the series… ‘After the Evictions’: a series of landscapes in places where people were evicted from. The 18 other slideshows go back in time…

CAMBODIA. Phnom Penh. 23/03/2010: New bridge to Koh Pich island. About 100 families living on the island and providing Phnom Penh with vegetables cultivated on the 70 ha of fertile soil were evicted in 2005. They were offered 2,5$/m2 whereas at the time the land was valued at 20 to 24$/m2.

Koh Pich island is getting ready for Khmer New Year. What once was the vegetable garden of Phnom Penh is turning into a place for trade fairs and weddings.

I’ll have a slideshow on this tomorrow.
