Golden Spurs Celebration…
In the series ‘This is not Belgium’… On July 11th in 1302, a bunch of Flemish beat the shit out of an army of French knights and took their golden spurs as a trophy. So goes the story… It has become the day for the Flemish Community of Belgium to remind the other French speaking half of the country that they are special. That other half of the country has the same kind of celebration to show they are not like the first half every year on September 27th. And every year since 1831, on July 21st, BOTH communities celebrate the independence of Belgium and the fact that they are living together. Is Belgium an interesting country or what?
