Lost opportunities
Well, some more lost opportunities for Cambodia. The Preah Vihear site (VIJ20098014), a quite obvious candidate for UNESCO’s World Heritage (see my updated website here) will not cash in on tourist revenues any time soon… There is a nice tarmac road right up to the Cambodian border on the Thai side or a 13h long drive from Phnom Penh over very bad roads (dry season highly recommended) with taxi drivers who are charging nearly the equivalent of a one way ticket from Phnom Penh to Bangkok: pick your choice… Add to that less than basic accomodation in unavoidable Ko Mouy, with blaring karaoke music nextdoor well into the night, a dangerous ride on a motorbike on the track up the cliff to the temple and that’ll explain why there are no tourists coming from the Cambodian side. Too bad. The place is stunning. But I guess that’s what ‘confines of the kingdom’ are about…
