Maybe we are a mistake in history. Maybe we are three different cultures caught into one border, turning us into a European curiosity.
But that’s not a problem. It is an asset.
We have been the favourite battleground for countless European armies for many centuries. We have been trampled and occupied by many and inseminated by many cultures.
We are a country. We are a complicated country. But we are a real country. We are not really a melting pot. More like a ‘stoemp’ or a ‘waterzooi’ altogether, with the meat and the vegetables separated but in the same soup. Tasty. Rich. Blended.
We are so much more than what unhealthy nationalism would like us to be…
