First pictures, first protest, same story

The people from Boeung Kak Lake gathered at ‘Democracy Square’ to protest their eviction by Shukaku Inc. which is filling the lake with sand and forcing 4000 families to move in the name of development. They were carrying banners from various donor countries (hint?).

‘Democracy Square’ is the only place in Phnom Penh where people can hold demonstrations once permission is granted. Most of the participants have to be identified by the authorities and their number is limited.

The square is… well, square. A flat, paved surface without the slightest patch of shade, surrounded by streets with very little traffic, and just opposite a police station.

It’s a bit like screaming in the desert.
