Independence Day at Boeung Kak
Nov. 9th is Independence Day in Cambodia. A country’s independence is supposed to allow its citizens to take care of themselves without outside interference. It supposes a certain degree of responsability, of compassion, of solidarity towards its fellow citizens. All nice virtues which are sometimes hard to find in Cambodia.
Exactly during the 57th ceremonies at Independence Monument gathering all those responsible for the Cambodian citizens, the eviction by Shukaku Inc. continues in the name of ‘development’. The company, backed by Chinese investors and belonging to Lao Meng Khin, Senator and member of the ruling CPP party, keeps on pumping sand in the Boeung Kak Lake, forcing inhabitants to dismantle their house, the offered compensation being ridiculously low.
Independence? From China? From money?
