Liberation? Invasion? Just a reminder…
On January 7th, 1979, the Vietnamese army liberated Phnom Penh from the Khmer Rouge regime which brutally ruled over Cambodia for 3 years, 8 months and 20 days. Because of the Cold War dictating global politics at the time, the presence of the vietnamese army was used as a pretext to keep the Khmer Rouge as unique representatives of Cambodia at the UN for many more years, thus prolonging the suffering of the cambodian population. Some still consider that it was an invasion and that those in power today are Vietnam’s puppets. Borders and the relationship with Vietnam are tricky issues here.
The monument commemorating the liberation is located in a park where people enjoy the evening winds while playing badminton .
