Book Peuples d en Haut
Book published by Autrement in Paris (77 rue du Fg. St Antoine, 75011 Paris) about people with a strong cultural identity living in mountaineous areas, this work was done between 1991 and 2000 and depicts the life of a Hmong community in Laos, a Mam indian community in Guatemala and a Svan village in the Georgian Caucasus. Mountains, or rough terrain, have always been an obstacle, a refuge, a natural bulwark against change, against outside aggression. People have always relied upon the mountains to defend and to protect themselves. The relative isolation and the difficult living conditions have built people which are very much aware of their identity and their culture, giving them the strength to adapt to a harsh topographical and climatic environment, inventing practical solutions to specific agricultural problems.
