On this day, 8 years ago, a Tsunami hit the Indonesian coastline of Banda Aceh. The estimated death toll for Indonesia alone was nearly 170,000 dead. Also 500,000 people were displaced, making the island the worst hit by the third most powerfull earthquake ever recorded.

I only managed to arrive in Banda Aceh on January 7th, having been stuck in Bangkok for several days with visa issues. The following picture was not included in the edit (see here) I made at the time on the aftermath of the disaster.

Phnom Penh is a crowded city. A real organic city: growing, evolving, adapting spontaneously with its inhabitants. Unlike many developed countries, and still for now, most Cambodians have their roots in a rural environment, subject to the laws of mother nature. The migrants coming to the capital adapt quickly to the concrete and disorder, leaving behind all nostalgia. It is the older city dwellers, living in the centre of town, who try to cling to some green. These photographs are part of a series on vegetation, desperately resisting in the bustling streets of central Phnom Penh.

Today: street 15…

It was a long wait for the many supporters but Chan Soveth, a Human Rights investigator with the NGO ADHOC, walked out of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court as a free man. He was accused of having helped people in relation to a so-called ‘secessionist movement’ in Kratie’s Broma village last May, when a 16-year old girls was killed by soldier’s gun fire during an eviction. Mam Sonando, owner of the independent ‘Beehive’ radio and head of the ‘Association of Democrats’ movement was accused of having been involved in the same eviction and was sentenced (see here) to 20 years in jail.

Day after tomorrow the Human Rights organisations and observers, as well of course as the Borei Keila and the Boeung Kak Lake communities will be on the edge as the trial of Yorm Bopha and Tim Sakmony will take place at that same Court.

Nope… It is not a christmas tree. It is part of the 30,000 signatures collected by Amnesty International requesting an end to illegal land grabbings in Cambodia also exhibited at a demonstration where more than 11,000 signatures collected in Cambodia on the same topic were handed over at the National Assembly… See here.

Two Boeung Kak Lake communities (here and here), one already evicted and the other under threat of an eviction, the Borei Keila community (here) and representatives of the Pochentong community requested a meeting with the World Bank related to its re-engagement with the governement after the bank suspended its lendings in 2011 in view of the situation at Boeung Kak Lake. At the time I left 8 representatives were going to be allowed inside to discuss their concerns.

This is the start of a new series, initiated here and continued here… December is a good month for this: crisp light for the next weeks…
