Back in Time: World Cup 1986

In 1986 I was asked by the French daily Libération to cover the World Cup in Mexico. Well, more the atmosphere around the competition than the game itself. Maybe you’ll have a hard time imagining this but it still was a non-digital world. Every second day I spent hours in traffic jams on the way to the airport to find a passenger bound for France who was willing to carry my films with his carry-on luggage (1986 definitely was before 9/11). A courrier would pick up the films upon arrival and bring them to the lab for processing. One of the few occasions I didn’t process my films myself by the way.

“Third-world photographers” could borrow a Canon AE1 and a long lens for the duration of the match. I managed to get one of those bodies and a 300mm (yes: MANUAL focus) for the final between Germany and Argentina and realised how difficult it was to catch the action AND the ball…

After the World Cup I moved down to Yucatan and started my 5-year long project on Refugees in the World.
